Green Lake Small Craft Center offers Adventure Camp

This summer Seattle Parks and Recreation and Green Lake Small Craft Center are offering Green Lake Adventure Camp 2015 for ages 11-14. The center is located at 5900 W Green Lake Way N.

The camp will be held from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, Aug. 3-14. Participants will learn canoeing, kayaking, sailing and water safety and can participate in tennis, golf, soccer and other activities around the lake.

The small craft center will provide all equipment and snacks. Some field trips may include traveling by van. Campers should bring a sack lunch, swimsuit, towel and change of clothes. [Read more…]

Enchantment in the trees: Experiential Play and Zip camp at Camp Long

UntitledShake things up this summer and spend a day suspended high up in the trees. West Seattle’s Camp Long is hosting eight sessions of Enchantment Experiential Play and Zip camp at the high ropes challenge course. Play and zipline with your friends 40 feet above the ground.

The experience is open to ages 14 and older and costs $30 per person. Sessions are Saturdays July 11 and 25; Aug. 8 and 22. The available time slots are 9:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. or 1:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.

Green Lake Small Craft Center offers beginning sailing

This summer Seattle Parks and Recreation and Green Lake Small Craft Center are offering weeklong youth sailing camps. The center is located at 5900 W Green Lake Way N.

The camps will be held from noon-4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, and sessions will be held from now until Aug. 14. Participants will learn sailing skills using the Topper boats available at Green Lake. Beginners will learn the basics of sailing, rigging, safety and boat handling. [Read more…]

Kids’ Carpentry turns students’ imagination into toys

On Saturday afternoons, kids at Magnolia Community Center aren’t playing with toys; they’re learning how to build them.

This winter, Instructor Loren Kite is teaching his Kids’ Carpentry class in Seattle Parks and Recreation  community centers for the first time. Kids’ Carpentry is a hands-on toy-building class designed to teach boys and girls ages 5-10 practical woodworking skills with an emphasis on the safe use of hand tools. The students are empowered to construct wooden toys of their own creation, building self-esteem, confidence and life skills. [Read more…]

Seattle Parks and Recreation opens Day Camp and Activity Camp registration

On Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015 Seattle Parks and Recreation will open registration for all of its amazing summer camp opportunities for youth ages 3-17!  This includes a wide variety of camps including Nature Camps, Preschool Camps, Tween Camps, Sports Camps, Arts Camps and more.

There are also state-licensed day camps available for children kindergarten through fifth grade. Participants will be put into age-appropriate groups to better meet the needs of the child.  Families may register children for a timeframe of one to 11 weeks.  Scholarships and Department of Social and Health Services subsidies are available for these camps. Green Lake boating center has courses in variety of boats, experience levels

Row, row, row your boat gently ‘round the lake. For novices, experts, sailors and boaters, the Green Lake Small Craft Center offers a variety of courses for all ages and experience levels in rowing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking.

Courses for youth ages 10-18 feature a variety of boating sports:

  • Youth Rowing (Grades 8-12/Ages 13-18): Youth gain a sense of accomplishment and pride as they work to meet the physical and mental challenges of rowing.
  • Youth Introduction to Canoe/Kayak (Ages 10-18): Participants learn water safety and basic paddling skills in an assortment of canoes and kayaks.
  • Youth Sailing Camp (Ages 10-17): Kids learn sailing skills in week-long summer camps, using the Topper sailboats at Green Lake.
  • Youth Sailing Camp II (Ages 10-17): Expand sailing skills and technique, open to sailors who have had at least one week of sailing camp during the summer of 2013 or later, or have an advanced beginner’s proficiency from another sailing club.
  • Youth Adventure Camp (Ages 11-14): Canoeing, kayaking and sailing on Green Lake, in addition to tennis, golf, swimming and field trips.

Adult classes are geared toward those 16 and older, and are also available in a variety of boating sports:

  • Adult Rowing (Ages 18+): Whether you’re new to rowing or are picking the sport up again, the center offers courses for all experience levels.
  • Adult Introduction to Canoe/Kayaking (Ages 16+): On-the-water courses designed to build paddling skills for safe canoeing and kayaking, whether it be solo or in a group boat.
  • Adult Learn to Sail (Ages 18+): Take advantage of the Seattle breeze with Toppers – learn rigging, sailing theory, water safety and more.
