This round of engagement introduces SPR’s new design approach for the community center, aquatic center and play area and invites the community to share feedback. Additional opportunities for input on the community center rebuild will follow in summer 2026.
SPR first began planning and design for the project in 2020. Based on community input gathered during 2020 open houses, we prioritized siting a new Evans Pool near the existing community center and developed several building design options. Soon after, in 2021, the existing Evans Pool building was designated as a historical landmark which limits our ability to alter the building and caused us to revisit the design. We are now sharing a new approach that preserves the landmarked building while maintaining the community’s vision from earlier feedback. The project includes two major components:
- A new aquatic facility will expand recreation opportunities for the community. Features will include a lap pool, a second recreation pool and a community room. This will require relocating and updating the play area.
- The existing Green Lake Community Center and historic Evans Pool building will be rebuilt through major renovations. The creation of the new aquatics center will allow the current Evans Pool building to be repurposed for community center use. Public engagement for the existing community center building is planned for summer 2026.
The current budget for the project is $59 million from the Seattle Park District, $3 million is secured for initial planning and design, and $56 million to be bond funded. We recently received a $5 million grant from the King County Aquatics Fund which provides additional funding for the aquatic components of the overall project. The proposed 2026/2027 budget increases the amount to be bonded to $73 million. If the 2026/2027 budget is adopted as proposed, the community center, aquatic center and play area to be rebuilt in one phase. The new play area is funded separately with $2.2 million from SPR’s play area renovation program .
