Ribbon Cutting Saturday, April 20th!
Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) and our partner, Ballard Alliance, invite the community to participate in the ribbon cutting for the new play area and a fun day at Ballard Commons Park. Please join us on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 5701 22nd Ave. NW.
“Ballard’s new play area is an investment in this thriving community. The nautical themed play equipment offers so much, with a nod to the community’s history and will contribute toward activating the park,” said AP Diaz, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent. “Seattle Parks and Recreation listened to the community and moved their vision forward. It was a wonderful collaboration and I want to thank all the partners, the community, City Council and the Mayor. The opening day will be a fun day and the play area will offer fun for generations to come.”
The celebration begins at 11 a.m. with a youth performance from School of Rock’s Bellevue House Band followed by the official ribbon cutting at noon. Entertainment continues after the ribbon cutting with music from School of Rock’s Seattle House Band, Little Stars Improv Comedy, Storytime with Fabi from Ballard Public Library, and music from the Ingraham High School Jazz Combo.
Additional activities will be occurring in the park in partnership with community partners.
“Cutting the ribbon and opening the long-awaited children’s playground at the Ballard Commons Park marks the next step in a multi-year plan improving the park so that Seattleites of all ages and abilities have a place in the park,” said Councilmember Dan Strauss. “The Ballard Alliance and community members have championed the addition of this children’s playground for years and partnered with me to secure funding for the project. We couldn’t have done this without our community champions, the Ballard Alliance, and Mayor Harrell’s continued support of our efforts. The next phases of changes will be the redevelopment of St. Luke’s Church into affordable housing for families, a new apartment complex, and new church sanctuary.”
SPR hired MIG design consultants who moved the community vision into finalized construction documents. SPR awarded the construction contract to A-1 Construction.
“After years of planning and engagement, the Ballard Alliance is excited to see this new children’s play area at Ballard Commons open to the community. We are truly grateful for our partnership on the project with the Mayor’s Office, Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Office of Councilmember Strauss. Not only does this new place offer an amazing opportunity for youth and families in our Ballard urban core, it’s a welcome addition that will help complete the transformation of Ballard Commons Park,” said Ballard Alliance Executive Director Mike Stewart. “We look forward to seeing everyone at the park on Saturday the 20th, over the summer and many years to come.”
