Rainier Community Center and Discovery Park Environmental Learning & Visitor Center Complete Accessibility Improvements

Seattle Parks and Recreation is excited to announce the completion of the Rainier Community Center and the reopening of the Discovery Park Environmental Learning & Visitor Center. Both centers were closed to remove barriers to accessibility on the Seattle Barrier Removal Schedule.

The Rainier Community Center project addressed approximately 100 barriers, including the following improvements:

  • Provide accessible parking stalls at the south and east entrances.
  • Provide accessible pathways, ramp, and entrance from the parking area to the community center south and east entrances and to the playground.
  • Make a number of interior improvements to remove barriers to accessibility (and the ADA) at toilet rooms and shower rooms, multi-purpose room, kitchen, classrooms, exercise room etc.

The Discovery Park Environmental Learning & Visitor Center project addressed approximately 160 barriers including the following improvements:

  • Accessible parking stalls and accessible bus load and unload zone
  • Accessible pathways from the parking area to the visitor center, amphitheater, tennis courts, playground, entry kiosk, and trail system
  • A new infiltrating bio-retention pond
  • Miscellaneous interior improvements to remove ADA barriers in toilet rooms, kitchen, classrooms, etc.

The Rainier Community Center and the Discovery Park Environmental Learning & Visitor Center are valuable assets to our community. These enhancements are a significant milestone in ensuring everyone can enjoy these spaces without limitations. We look forward to welcoming the community to experience these improvements firsthand.
