South Park Community Center Temporarily Closes for Redevelopment Renovations

South Park Community Center closed, today, September 1, 2023, for the planned South Park Community Center Stabilization Project, a major building renovation, which will address maintenance, accessibility, and program needs to extend the life of the facility and increase programming potential. The entire community center will re-open in spring 2025.

The community center renovations project is in conjunction with the playfield and surrounding park area redevelopment which will include a spray park, play area, picnic area, lawn, extended parking, off-leash area, a full-size multi-sport court. Additionally, the project includes an all-season synthetic lit turf field with a circular walking trail created in partnership with Seattle Academy (SAAS).

The project is funded by the Seattle Park District and includes the Major Projects Challenge Fund, state grants and a partnership with Seattle Academy.

“We are excited to be moving this important project forward after years of planning and permitting. This project will create a vibrant multi-use and multi-generational facility for the South Park community,” said AP Diaz, Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Superintendent. “SPR’s partnership with Seattle Academy provides free programs for South Park youth. As part of this partnership, the new field will be kept out of the Citywide reservation system, for up to 5 years, to erase barriers to participation by enabling the community to utilize drop-in time field play, providing a process for the South Park community to schedule field use, and encouraging the formation of neighborhood sports programs.”

SPR understands the importance of programming and services that this center provides and has worked with community partners to relocate some services during the closure. Seattle Academy will continue to provide programming while the center is closed. Much of the South Park Community Center programming is moving to Concord International Elementary School, 723 S Concord St, Seattle, WA 98108. Beginning September 15, programming for all ages will occur Monday through Thursday (6:30 – 8:30 p.m.). SPR Late Night on Friday (6:30-10:30 p.m.) will be open for ages 13 to 19 and SPR Late Night on Saturday (3:30 – 8:30 p.m.) for ages 9 to 12.  All programs will occur in the gym and cafeteria at Concord.
