Winter Weather Impacts 12.23.22

Due to the inclement weather, some Seattle Parks and Recreation programs and facilities are impacted today (Friday, Dec 23rd).

Impacts for Friday, December 23rd:  

Parks:  

  • During snow events, our nearly 500 parks remain open, unless otherwise indicated.  
  • Gate and bathroom openings may be delayed as staff navigate snowy roads  
  • Athletic fields will also be opened for non-motorized winter recreation for households and small groups.  
  • We encourage all visitors to use caution in our outdoor spaces. Snow and ice can cause tree branches to snap; please stay out from under trees and avoid forested parks.  

Specialty Gardens: Volunteer Park Conservatory and Kubota Gardens are CLOSED today, 12/23. 

Comfort Stations:  If you are visiting parks this morning – they are open, please expect a delayed comfort station opening. We expect to open restrooms mid-day.

  • West Magnolia South Comfort Station closed due winterization (no power and pipes freezing).   
  • Mathews Beach Comfort Station closed due to winterization (pipes and sinks freezing).   
  • Alki 63rd Comfort Station closed due winterization (freezing temps). 
  • Alki 57th Comfort Station closed due winterization (freezing temps). 
  • Lincoln WP Comfort Station closed due winterization (freezing temps). 
  • Hiawatha Comfort Station closed due winterization (freezing temps). 
  • Green Lake 65th Comfort Station closed due winterization (freezing temps). 
  • Cal Anderson Comfort Station closed due winterization (freezing temps). 

Amy Yee Tennis Center: 

  • *update* Due to the extreme weather conditions, the facility will be CLOSED today.

Golf*update* Due to the treacherous conditions the golf driving ranges, restaurants and Pro Shops will be closed for the day. We are expecting to resume normal operations tomorrow. 

  • Jackson Park: CLOSED. Winter activities allowed but discouraged. 
  • Jefferson Park: CLOSED. Winter activities allowed but discouraged. 
  • Interbay: CLOSED. Winter activities allowed but discouraged. 
  • West Seattle: CLOSED. Winter activities allowed but discouraged. 

SPR Facilities: Due to icy conditions, we’ll be activating our inclement weather plan.   

  • We will OPEN community centers, teen life centers, and environmental centers from 11am-3pm as warming centers and for drop-in recreation activity only. 
    • Lake City 3pm-7pm
    • Magnuson 2pm – 6pm
    • Ravenna-Eckstein 12:30 – 4:30pm
    • Van Asselt 12pm – 4pm
  • Community Centers CLOSED:

    • Rainier Beach Pool will operate for drop-in swim from 12-2:30pm and lifeguard class only from 2:30p-7:00p

  • Due to the temperatures being below freezing and very icy road conditions Rec N The Streets has cancelled outdoor operations for Friday, 12/23.  
  • CLOSED: all School Age Winter Break Camps and Preschool Programs
  • Creative Kids (third party preschool) at Carkeek Park Environmental Learning Center is closed all week due to inclement weather.

Safety reminders:  

  • We encourage everyone to stay out from under trees and avoid forested park areas during high winds and/or if heavy snow or ice covers the trees.  
  • To report downed trees or branches in parks, or other maintenance issues, please call 206-684-7250.  
  • Trail users, please use caution during wet and/or icy conditions.
