Support recreation scholarships this #GivingTuesday

Celebrate #GivingTuesday by supporting recreation scholarships for Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) programs.

The Associated Recreation Council (ARC) and SPR are increasing opportunity and access to recreation through scholarships for programs at community centers, recreational facilities, and pools across the city. These scholarships are made possible, in part, through the generous support of donors like you. Your gift will go directly to support recreation scholarships at all SPR facilities. Click here to make a donation through ARC.

Your gift will have a direct impact on the health and well-being of community members.
• $25 will provide 2 field trips for Special Populations participants.
• $50 will provide 11 weeks of Aerobics Classes for an adult aged 50+.
• $100 will provide 13 weeks of Beginner Youth Swim Lessons.
• $250 will provide 1 week of Summer Camps for a Seattle-area youth.

Kristeena Garcia, a scholarship recipient, recently shared how scholarships help support her family:

I’m the Mom of two curious and active boys, 20 months apart. Raising them is endlessly fulfilling … and equally exhausting!  Both are enrolled in the After School program at Delridge Community Center as well as play recreational basketball there. My 8-year-old finds his joy in singing and soccer; his older brother dreams about acting in and producing videos one day. Both boys love spending time in the computer lab, mastering Minecraft, socializing with their peers, completing their homework, having fun and learning. That community center is like our second home.

Raising my two boys hasn’t always been easy. I’ve been a single mom for the past 2 years, and despite my wonderful family nearby, I can’t always impose on them for help. Emotionally and financially, it’s often stressful.

That’s where the Delridge Community Center has made a big impact on me and my family. Thanks to Seattle Parks and Recreation’s scholarship fund, which is supported by the voter-approved Seattle Park District and supplemented by individual donations, I have been able to pay for programs and activities, and my sons are in a safe, fun, caring place every day after school while I’m at work. I’m so grateful to be a recipient of those scholarship funds, and grateful to generous people like you who made them available to us. Thank you.

As we enter this annual season of gratitude and celebration, I’m honored to ask you to help other families like mine. Please make a gift to support the scholarship fund that has helped my boys be healthy, safe, and active. I’m told scholarship funds run out long before the need is met. You can help that. All donations make a difference, no matter what amount you choose.

Thank you in advance for your gift. It will change lives; it certainly changed mine. Happy holidays!

With gratitude,

Kristeena Garcia
