Maintaining our community centers

Community centers are the backbone of the Seattle Parks and Recreation system. In addition to enabling health, recreation, and fitness, they serve as anchors of many of our neighborhoods and support a healthy environment and strong communities.

In our 2016 Community Center Strategic Plan, we identified eight community centers in need of major maintenance work. This spring, we are turning our focus to address the needs at these centers.

Thanks to funding from the tax payer-supported Seattle Park District, Seattle Parks and Recreation can undertake large-scale improvement projects that are critical to keeping many of our well-loved, aging facilities open and accessible to the public.

To start this process, we are teaming up with community leaders to conduct “walkthroughs” of these facilities. The walkthroughs will allow us to get input from Community Center Advisory Councils and community leaders about what is needed to stabilize these facilities. We will share our findings with the greater community and provide a timeline for expected maintenance work.

We consider ourselves lucky to have the job of providing engaging and safe community spaces for Seattle’s residents. Keeping our doors open, and keeping programs accessible is our priority.

Get updates on this process through our blog, social media, or website, and reach out with any questions by emailing us at pks_info@seattle.gov.

In addition to this work, beginning this summer, we will ask all of Seattle to engage with us in a discussion about how we can best meet Seattle’s longterm recreation needs. As our city grows and changes, we strive to be great stewards of the park systems’ resources and facilities, providing recreation opportunities that ALL of Seattle’s communities can enjoy!
