Seward Park has reopened

As of 3:00 p.m. this afternoon, Seward Park in south Seattle has reopened to the public.

Seattle Parks and Recreation crews have been working yesterday and today to remove fallen trees, limbs and hanging branches to make the walking paths and roads safe to the public.

Over the weekend, unusually high winds affected areas across Seattle and caused at least 25 trees to fall in various parks around the city. As a precaution, Seward Park, Carkeek Park and Golden Gardens Off-leash area were closed to the public. Seward Park and Carkeek Park have now reopened. The Golden Gardens Off-leash area remains closed due to a downed power line. Seattle City Light crews are working on site today.

Parks crews have been working all over the city clearing trees and branches from roads, and assessing trees that are leaning.

Over the weekend and today, our crews removed large trees at several other areas, including: Meadowbrook Community Center, Interlake Blvd, Queen Anne Blvd., Kinnear Park, Seola Park, and E Duwamish Greenbelt.

Seattle Parks and Recreation tree crews routinely assess and maintain trees in our park system on a daily basis, constantly on the lookout for hazardous conditions per industry guidelines. Crews look for leaning trunks, fallen branches, irregular growth, sparse branches and fungus as evidence of failing or dying trees. There are also hidden hazards that are not visually apparent such as rotting roots; these are conditions that only become apparent when a tree leans or falls.

If you want to report a fallen or dying tree, please call our work order line at 206-684-7250.
