AT&T and City of Seattle to host a mobile app ‘Hackathon’

Let the competition begin!

Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Department of Information Technology and AT&T are hosting a mobile app competition with a parks and recreation theme. The competition, or hackathon, will take place March 18-19 at Surf Incubator, located at 999 Third Avenue in downtown Seattle. The event is fully sponsored and organized by AT&T.

Participants will have 24 hours to design and build their mobile apps, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 18 and ending at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. Loaner hardware will be available to developers, including Arduino boards, Raspberry Pi kits, a Grove Starter Kit Intel IoT edition, and more. Prizes include $2,750 in gift cards, including $1,000 for the best overall app and $500 for the best parks and recreation-themed app.

Jesús Aguirre, Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation, will be the keynote speaker and serve as a judge. Several additional City of Seattle staff will be present to mentor, help participants find and understand parks-related open data, and encourage solutions that make it easier to enjoy Seattle’s great outdoors, including publicly funded recreation activities. Additionally, Seattle Parks and Recreation will be making new datasets available prior to the hackathon through the City’s open data portal, data.seattle.gov.
