A Community Vision Takes Root: Memorial Garden Development Project in Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR), in partnership with Clean Greens Farm & Market, Solace, the Black Agriculture Leadership Council, and the NAACP, is proud to announce the launch of the MLK Memorial Garden Development Project at Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park. This community-led initiative aims to create a garden and enhanced park space that promotes healing, solidarity, and sustainable living.

By centering community voices throughout the design process, SPR seeks to co-create a garden that honors Seattle’s Black diaspora, celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s enduring legacy, and provides a dedicated space for reflection and remembrance of those lost too soon to gun violence.

“This project is about more than gardening, it’s about building a space rooted in justice, healing, and community resilience,” said AP Diaz, Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation. “We’re grateful to be working alongside strong community leaders and organizations committed to dedicating a reimagined memorial space for the community.”

Phase 1 Garden Coming Summer 2025

As part of this work, SPR is excited to share the installation of a Phase 1 Garden this summer. Located adjacent to the park’s fountain, this interim garden will serve as a first step in reactivating the space, offering opportunities for community gathering, healing, and storytelling while building momentum for the full design.

Community members are invited to join us for two upcoming events:

  1. Planting Party Meet ‘n’ Greet
    Saturday, June 21 | 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Connect with the design team and help bring the Phase 1 Garden to life.
  2. Phase 1 Garden Public Engagement Event
    Saturday, July 12 | 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Celebrate the new space and share your vision for the permanent memorial garden.

Both events will take place at Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park (2200 Martin Luther King Jr Way S, Seattle, WA 98144) and will feature community partners, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to get involved in the project’s next phase.
