Soundview Playfield Renovation Construction Begins

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is pleased to announce the beginning of construction for the Soundview Playfield renovation project. SPR has contracted with Terra Dynamics, Inc. who will mobilize at Soundview Playfield, 1590 NW 90th Street, adjacent to Whitman Middle School in northwest Seattle, the week of May 5 to begin the construction project.

“Together with the athletic field community, SPR is delighted to move this project forward.  This playfield renovation will offer Seattle another multi-sport field for all that provides year-round play,” said AP Diaz, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent. “This large investment activates the Community Work Force Agreement which is exciting because we get to use this project as an opportunity to expose the Whitman Middle School students to the world of construction and trades employment. Thank you to the community for your patience as we moved this project into construction.”

A groundbreaking event will take place on May 28 with the project to be completed in Fall 2025. The project will provide a new synthetic turf field with lighting that offers accessible softball, baseball, football and soccer fields. SPR is converting the existing natural turf playfield to an all-season, multi-sport synthetic turf playfield with lights, accessible pathways and park amenities. SPR and Terra Dynamics will work to minimize the construction impact in the neighborhood. Thank you in advance to Whitman Middle School community and the Crown Hill / North Beach community for your patience and cooperation during construction.

The Seattle Park District Cycle 2 provides partial funding for this playfield renovation along with funding to ensure Seattle’s nearly 500 parks, playfields, and community centers remain welcoming places for recreation, learning, and healthy communities. SPR continues to lead the way in developing and installing synthetic turf fields by investing in a state-of-the-art synthetic turf system that is safe, playable, durable, and retains less heat in the summer. Our standard is to provide a sustainable cork and sand infill over a cushioned pad system with sub-subsurface drainage. Additionally, we are investing in the highest quality energy-efficient field lighting which minimizes spill light and glare off the field while providing performance recreational light. The project will improve the accessibility to the field in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

This field conversion will open up new field time and SPR is seeking to equitably distribute this time to new and emerging user groups who have historically experienced barriers to accessing regular recurring field time in our system. Please complete the form to submit your interest in accessing this new field time and SPR will follow-up with a request for more detailed information. If you need assistance with the form or translation services, please contact 206-684-4077. Please submit your interest by 5 p.m. on May 15, 2025.
