Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) issued the Notice to Proceed to Neeley Construction Co. for the South Park Community Center Stabilization and Site Redevelopment Project. Neely Construction will mobilize on site during the week of May 28, 2024. They will work to minimize the impact of construction on the community.
The South Park Community Center Stabilization Project, a major building renovation, will address maintenance, accessibility, and program needs to extend the life of the facility and increase programming potential. It includes a renovation of the kitchen, front reception area, restrooms and provides a new childcare area. The community center renovation project is in conjunction with the playfield and surrounding park area redevelopment which will include a spray park, play area, picnic area, lawn, extended parking, dog off-leash area, and a full-size multi-sport court supported by the Kraken. Additionally, the project includes an all-season synthetic lit turf field created in partnership with Seattle Academy (SAAS).
“We are happy to be at this milestone in project delivery and look forward to cutting the ribbon with the community on this project in the spring of 2026,” said AP Diaz, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent. “SPR’s partnership with Seattle Academy provides free programs for South Park youth. As part of this partnership, the new field will be kept out of the Citywide reservation system, for up to five years, to erase barriers to participation by enabling the community to utilize drop-in time field play, providing a process for the South Park community to schedule field use, and encouraging the formation of neighborhood sports programs.”
SPR understands the importance of programming and services that this center provides and has worked with community partners to relocate some services during the closure. THIS SUMMER: SPR and Seattle Academy (SAAS) are partnering to offer free drop-in camps for ages 7-17 (free transportation is provided to/from South Park Community Center) at A.T. Milo Park and Southwest Teen Life Center. Additionally, this summer, SPR will be providing free drop-in activities for all ages at Duwamish Waterway Park provided by our Mobile Recreation Unit, Free Summer Lunch Program, and Arts in the Park. Our Teen/Tween Late Night Programs will continue this summer and into next year in the Gym and Cafeteria of Concord International School. This is a free drop-in program on Fridays for teens ages 13-19 from 6:30pm-10:30pm, and for Tweens on Saturdays ages 9-12 from 3:30 pm-8:30 pm. Starting in the new 2024-2025 school year, we will resume regular evening programming in the Gym and Cafeteria of Concord International School from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm Monday through Thursday. Our Late Night programs will continue regular hours on Fridays and Saturdays.
