Community Celebration & Ribbon Cutting for Dr. Blanche Lavizzo Park

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) invites the community to a ribbon-cutting celebration for Dr. Blanche Lavizzo Park, in Seattle’s Central District on Saturday, November 18, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will feature music, food and an opportunity to explore the renovated park. This park renovation was an exciting collaboration between SPR, KABOOM! and The Car Max Foundation.

This is a kid-designed park built by more than 80 volunteers and will spark joy and foster a sense of belonging for the Central District Community neighborhood. The new playground is a collaborative effort by community members and organizations including, KABOOM!, The CarMax Foundation, The McKinney Center for Community & Economic Development, the Associated Recreation Council, Kindness for Kaneon, the Seattle Conservation Corps and scores of community volunteers.

“As we celebrate the renovated park, we are honoring Dr. Blanche Lavizzo, the first African American woman pediatrician in the state of Washington, who was a dedicated community member and a strong advocate for the health of this community,” said AP Diaz, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent. “This vibrant space, imagined by the creativity of our children, stands as a symbol of our commitment to fostering inclusive play and community engagement. This park embodies our shared vision for healthy people, a thriving environment, and a vibrant community and the positive outcomes associated with public private partnership.”

The play area features new play equipment and structures for children of all abilities and ages 2 to 12. The renovation of this play area is part of our One Seattle effort to bridge our communities together and stands as a true testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together. We can’t wait for the community to enjoy their new play area!
