Construction on Christie Park renovation begins

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) awarded the construction contract to Terra Dynamics, Inc. for the Christie Park expansion project. They will begin demolition work of the existing park features by Friday, November 22, 2019. This park expansion project provides more open space for the University District by doubling the size of the existing Christie Park located at 4257 9th Ave. NE.

The new design addresses safety and accessibility, and promotes park activities. Many of the existing park elements will be demolished, opening sight lines and improving visibility. The new park will feature an open lawn, plantings, trees, a multi-use plaza with donated art, a loop trail, and a fitness area. The “Explorer Voyage” art piece by Paul Sorey, donated by Friends of Christie Park, celebrates the community’s connection to the Taiwanese Community, James Christie, and University of Washington.

SPR anticipates celebrating the completion of the park expansion with the community in late spring 2020.

Funding for this park project is provided by the Seattle Park District. Approved by Seattle voters in 2014, the Seattle Park District provides more than $47 million a year in long-term funding for Seattle Parks and Recreation including maintenance of parklands and facilities, operation of community centers and recreation programs, and development of new neighborhood parks on previously acquired sites.

Thank you to the U-District Partnership and the Friends of Christie Park for their support of this project and assistance during the public process.
