Partnership Highlight: Tennis Centers

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) supports healthy people by providing invigorating ways for residents to connect with others through sports and exercise. SPR maintains 160 tennis courts throughout Seattle, including those at the Amy Yee Tennis Center, and we also partner with Tennis Center at Sand Point to expand access to tennis in our community.

Tennis Center Sand Point at Magnuson Park

Tennis Center Sand Point (TCSP), located at the Magnuson Park complex, is an indoor tennis facility that strives to cultivate community and educate players to succeed on and off the court. Each year, through a partnership agreement with SPR, TCSP provides free or reduced cost programs to the public, as well as other services that enrich our community.

Public Benefits:

  • Free courts for seniors: TCSP provides over 500 hours per year in free court time for seniors ages 65 and up. The public benefit value of TCSP’s free senior court program is estimated at $18,270. To access free tennis, seniors must call ahead to the front desk to reserve a court. Free Senior Tennis Court Hours are 8:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Mondays through Fridays (Regular Season) and Fridays through Sundays (Summer Season).
  • Scholarships for youth: Last year, TCSP awarded $25,000 in junior scholarships for classes and private lessons. Scholarships are awarded based on need or merit to youth ages 5 to 18. For more information on scholarships, email Lisa Moholt, Director of Junior Tennis, at lisa@tenniscentersandpoint.com.
  • Giving back to the community: TCSP hosts many fundraising events throughout the year for causes that support community needs. In 2017 alone, TCSP raised $25,000 for Fred Hutch and UW medicine cancer research; $5,000 for Solid Ground’s summer youth program; $1,800 for the ACEing Autism; and donated over 60 tennis packages totaling more than $18,000 to local schools and charitable auctions. To participate in TCSP’s fundraising and donation efforts, email info@tenniscentersandpoint.com.
  • Facility space for Adaptive Tennis: TCSP partners with Seattle Adaptive Sports to facilitate tennis opportunities for those in wheelchairs, hosting an annual Wheelchair Tennis Camp and the annual Seattle Up/Down Tournament. For more information, contact Seattle Adaptive Sports at info@seattleadaptivesports.org or 206-963-0916.
  • Public access to TCSP restrooms: TCSP makes their restroom facilities available to the community and Magnuson Park visitors during the Center’s normal operating hours.
  • Free court time for Brettler Place youth: Through a partnership with the nonprofit Solid Ground, TCSP donates an hour of free court time to host a weekly tennis clinic for the youth at Brettler Place, an apartment building which provides affordable housing to local Sand Point community members. The tennis clinic is part of SPR’s Rock the Park program and outreach is coordinated via the Magnuson Community Center. The value this service provides to the community estimated to be $1,672.50.
