Your Seattle Parks and Recreation Concrete/Playground Crew consists of a dedicated group who manage multiple tasks on a wide variety of job assignments. The installation, maintenance, and repair of park sidewalks, pathways, fencing, play area features, and signs are just a small sampling of the work that they perform.
Last week, the crew was busy working at West Montlake Park where tree roots had buckled and damaged the sidewalk creating an uneven surface that made it difficult for pedestrians to use. Staff completely removed all of the existing concrete, inserted rebar to give longevity, used forms to contain the newly poured concrete, and smoothed the surface with trowels to finish.
At View Ridge Playfield, the crew installed a new concrete slab for bleacher support and also installed a new base and bearing parts on the whirl toy as a preventive measure to increase the longevity of this popular play piece. At Powell Barnett Play Area, the crew installed new basketball supports and at Northgate Community Center they assembled and installed a concrete ping pong table. In order to complete this project, staff attached concrete anchors which made the table level and sturdy. Asphalt repairs were also made to several sections of the Burke-Gilman Trail.
At Helene Madison Pool, the crew worked quickly to make repairs to the pool’s shell structure. Once the pool was drained, the crew had a small window of opportunity to get the work done as anything greater than three days requires that sprinklers are used to keep the pool plaster moist to avoid cracking.
