From now until March 12, the Magnuson Park Gallery is hosting Reflections of My Race, Reflections of My Life, the first solo exhibit of Seattle artist H. Edwin Phillips. Long a contributor to Seattle’s creative scene, Phillips waited until later in life before expressing his own thoughts and reflections through paintings and drawings. The result is a naïve and exuberant talent the gallery is proud to share with the community for the first time.
Coinciding with Black History Month, the gallery will host students from nearby Sand Point Elementary on a field trip to the gallery for a talk by the artist. Much of the work focuses on eyes, mouths and faces, exploring ways to deal with how we are each subject to the judgment of others. Phillips explores being true to oneself in spite of challenging social norms.
The exhibit is curated by the local team of Los Castellanos, and runs through March 12. On Saturday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 6 p.m., the Magnuson Park Gallery will host an artist reception.
