Seattle Parks Legacy Plan Citizens Committee to meet Thursday, December 12

The Citizens Advisory Committee appointed to consider Seattle Parks and Recreation’s future funding options hosts a regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, December 12, at Miller Community Center, 330 19th Ave. E at 6 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.

At this meeting, the committee will reach consensus on the Interim Committee Report, and  discuss the 2014 public engagement strategy and the Committee’s 2014 schedule.

The committee has set aside 10 minutes at the beginning of this meeting to take public comment. Those wishing to address the committee are encouraged to arrive early and sign up. If there are more people who wish to speak than can be accommodated at the beginning of the meeting, time will be set aside at the end for additional public comments.

The Mayor and Council created the committee to review the draft Parks Legacy Plan (http://www.seattle.gov/parks/legacy) and to propose options for funding operations and maintenance, development and acquisition of parks and recreation facilities and programs. A revised edition of the Parks Legacy Plan: Draft Goals and Strategies can be downloaded from the project’s website.

Committee members are: Barbara Wright, Co-Chair; Charlie Zaragoza, Co-Chair; Thatcher Bailey; Steve Daschle; Juli Farris; Bill Farmer; Thomas Goldstein; Jessie Israel; Diana Kincaid; Michael Maddux; Brice Maryman; Yalonda Gill Masundire; Mustapha Math; David Namura; and Erika Melroy.

Following this Thursday’s meeting, the committee’s next meetings will  be public open houses to hear community responses to the Interim Report. The open houses will be held:

  • Thursday, January 23, 6 – 7:30 p.m. at International District/Chinatown Community Center, 719 8th Ave. S, from
  • Saturday, January 25, 1 – 2:30 p.m. (childcare will be provided) at High Point Community Center, 6920 34th Ave. SW
  • Thursday, January 30, 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Bitter Lake Community Center, 13035 Linden Ave. N

Seattle Park Board to hold regular meeting November 14

The Seattle Board of Park Commissioners will hold its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 14, in the Kenneth R. Bounds Park Board Room at 100 Dexter Ave. N, in Denny Park at the corner of Dexter and Denny. The meeting agenda includes:

Bicycle Use Policy. At the October 10 Park Board meeting, there was a briefing and public hearing on the proposed changes to the Bicycle Use policy. A draft and a red-line version of the Bicycle Use Policy are available here: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/parkboard/default.asp.

  • Seattle Parks and Recreation staff will answer questions received from the Park Board and Seattle residents in response to the proposed changes to the Bicycle Use Policy. The Park Board will discuss the proposed changes.
  • The deadline to send comments regarding the proposed changes to the Bicycle Use Policy has been extended to December 19. To submit comments, please send them to the Board of Park Commissioners, c/o Rachel Acosta, 100 Dexter Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98109 or via email at Rachel.Acosta@Seattle.gov.
  • The Park Board will make a recommendation to the Superintendent at the January 9, 2014 meeting.

Legacy Plan and Committee Update

Parks staff will update the Board of Park Commissioners on the work of the Parks Legacy Citizens Advisory Committee (PLCAC).  The Mayor and City Council convened the committee to evaluate the need for, and components of, a future park and recreation funding measure.

The committee is composed of two co-chairs, a representative each from the Board of Park Commissioners, Seattle Parks Foundation, and the Associated Recreation Council, and additional committee members, residents who represent differing viewpoints across the city who were appointed by the Mayor and City Council.

  • Ben Noble, Director of City Council Central Staff and Hall Walker, Deputy Director of the City Budget Office will give the Board a presentation detailing the funding mechanisms the Parks Legacy Citizens Advisory Committee (PLCAC) is considering for a future Parks ballot measure. http://www.seattle.gov/parks/legacy/committee.htm

  • Parks staff will present the investment initiatives (funding measures) that are currently being prioritized by the PLCAC
  • Parks staff will update the Board of Park Commissioners on the progress of the Parks Legacy Plan, and the next steps.

The Seattle Board of Park Commissioners is a nine-member citizen board created by the City Charter. Four members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council; four members are appointed by the City Council; and one member is a young adult appointed by the YMCA Get Engaged Program (http://www.leadershiptomorrowseattle.org/YMCA.asp). Current members are Antoinette Angulo, Tom Tierney, Bob Edmiston, Jourdan Keith, Chair Diana Kincaid, Brice Maryman, Mazohra Thami, Yazmin Mehdi and Barbara Wright.
