This Thursday, Sept. 2, is the second of three consecutive weeks of Dancing ‘til Dusk at the Olympic Sculpture Park, 2901 Western Ave. It’s also the next to last week of the outdoor summer program. The last Dancing ‘til Dusk will Thursday, Sept. 9, at the Olympic Sculpture Park.
Pre-dance lessons are from 6 – 7 p.m. Free dancing and live music follows until 9 p.m. Dancing ’til Dusk is an easy, approachable way to try a little dancing. It’s all free. The music and dancing are fun to watch, and it’s outside.
Last week was a huge success with dancing out on the Sculpture Park Pavilion covered terrace, and with Seattle Parks’ portable dance floor and overflow dancing inside the Pavilion. Since the terrace is covered, we are on for the event regardless of rain, short of a monsoon, perhaps. The weather cancellation hotline for this event is (206) 264-5646.
There are other activities as well on Thursday in the Sculpture Park, which makes for a particularly lovely and lively evening. Most notably, a Farmer’s Market stretches along the paths.
You may also catch a bite to eat and a glass of wine at Taste, the Sculpture Park’s resident eatery before dancing.
This week’s Dancing ’til Dusk features KGB for our last Ball Blanc (wear all white!) with glorious Waltzes of all tempos, some Swing, Tango, Polka and One-step.
Getting there: The Sculpture Park Pavilion is at the NW corner of Broad and Western Ave (2901 Western Ave). It is best to enter the event through the Pavilion doors.
Donations: This is a free program, but donations are welcome. The coordinating organization would like to get a leg u on the expenses for next year. If willing, tuck a donation into your dance bag to leave with us. Given the uncertain fiscal and budgetary climate, it’s just a way of helping to ensure the continuity of this fabulous program.
Dress: Wear something white to our Ball Blanc — T-shirts to tuxes, shorts to ball gowns and delight in the magic of swirling dancers as the sun sinks into the evening.
Hydration: With warm weather and or active dancing, plan to bring water to stay hydrated. (And then take your bottles home to recycle!)
6 – 7 p.m. : Pre-dance waltz lesson taught by Jamie Shamseldin and Lilli Ann Carey.
7 – 9 p.m. : KBG, known for outstanding Waltzes, will take the stage.
7:55 p.m. : At the break, dance instructors and dancers will demo Turning/Rotary/ Viennese Waltz.
About KGB
No security clearances are required to enjoy Seattle’s KGB. With fiddle, mandolin, guitar and piano, KGB creates subversive music lulling the unwary with traditional New England Contra dance tunes, then jumping off into Balkan modalities, Tango riffs and bluesy jigs. KGB’s extraordinary waltzes captivate dancers song after song, each melody more delightful or exquisite than the last. kgbmole.com
