On Sunday, October 10, 2010, Sustainable Ballard will join 350.org for a Global Work Party that includes more than 7,000 events in 180 nations.
According to climate scientists, 350 is the upper limit of CO2 in parts per million that can be in our atmosphere to support healthy human life. Currently, our CO2 is closer to 390 and we are increasing this level of CO2 every year. 10/10/10 is a Global Day of Action with events designed to implement solutions to climate change and send politicians a clear message, “We are getting to work – what about you?”
The Sustainable Ballard event begins at 10 a.m.at Ballard Commons Park at NW 57th Street and 22nd Avenue NW. Guest speakers include Cecile Andrews, founder of Phinney Ecovillage; Seattle City Councilmember Mike O’Brien; and Jenny Heins, regional director of the Seattle Green Festival and Sustainable Ballard President.
At 1 p.m., community members are invited to join educational workshops and work parties in the park and throughout the Ballard neighborhood. Workshop topics include bicycle maintenance and building worm bins and solar cookers. Work parties include restoring native habitat at Golden Gardens and building storm windows for Sunset Hill Community Association Clubhouse.
The day will end with music, food, and celebration at Ballard Commons Park, 5701 22nd Ave. NW, at 4:30 p.m.. Work party registration and details are available at fest.sustainableballard.org.
