Annual awards recognize outstanding volunteer service
Today Superintendent Jesús Aguirre announced the winners of Seattle Parks and Recreation’s 2015 Denny Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Stewardship. The winners are a cross-section of Seattle’s most creative, dedicated and hard-working volunteers who donate precious time and energy to improving Seattle’s parks and recreation programs.
“It was difficult for us to choose winners,” Aguirre said. “To us, all of our volunteers are winners. We are so grateful to the many people who make Seattle Parks and Recreation shine.”
In 2014, 36,633 people volunteered for Seattle Parks and Recreation, providing 257,152 hours of service. Winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Dec. 1, 2015 at the Museum of Flight. [Read more…]
Many Seattle Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed for one or more days in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
- Community centers and teen life centers are closed Nov. 26-27
- Environmental learning centers are closed Nov. 26-27
- Indoor swimming pools are closed Nov. 26-27
- Green Lake Small Craft Center is closed Nov. 26-28
- Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center is closed Nov. 26-28
Seattle Parks and Recreation invites the community to provide input for the north play area renovation project in Lincoln Park on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at Southwest Teen Life Center from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Seattle Parks and Recreation’s in-house landscape architect and project planner will provide information on the renovation project and gather community input on play features and amenities. Southwest Teen Life Center is located at 2801 SW Thistle St.
This project will replace the play equipment, provide access improvements and improve other features at the park. Lincoln Park is located in West Seattle at 8011 Fauntleroy Way SW. [Read more…]
The Board of Park Commissioners canceled the Nov. 12 and Dec. 10, 2015 meetings for the busy holiday season. The Board will reconvene in January.
The Seattle Board of Park Commissioners is a nine-member citizen board created by the City Charter. Four members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council; four members are appointed by the City Council; and one member is a young adult appointed by the YMCA Get Engaged program http://pugetsoundoff.org/getengaged. The Board generally meets twice a month, normally on the second and fourth Thursday, to advise the Parks and Recreation Superintendent, the Mayor, and the City Council on parks and recreation matters.
Many Seattle Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed, Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015 due to an all-staff in-service day. The majority of classes and programs will not be running.
The following programs and facilities will be open:
- Amy Yee Tennis Center (8:30 a.m. -10:30 p.m.)
- Jackson, Jefferson, Interbay, West Seattle golf courses
Seattle Parks and Recreation invites the community to discuss the site improvements proposed by Cascade Bicycle Club near Building 11 in Magnuson Park during a public meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015. The meeting will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Belvedere Terrace Room at The Brig in Magnuson Park, 6344 NE 74th St.
The Cascade Bicycle Club is a long-term partner in Magnuson Park. The group is proposing to construct:
- Wood post and beam canopies on the east and west sides of Building 11.
- Building 40 (Paint Shop) renovations for bicycle repair and storage.
- A planter wall to capture groundwater seepage from a hillside retaining wall.
- A traffic garden layout for conducting safety classes in a portion of the west alley.
Many Seattle Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.
These facilities and services are CLOSED:
- Community centers
- Teen life centers
- Environmental learning centers
- Indoor swimming pools
- Green Lake Small Craft Center
- Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center
Ballard Pool is closed now through Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015 for annual preventive maintenance. The facility will reopen on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015.

Last year 845 volunteers helped the Green Seattle Partnership plant nearly 5,000 plants in 21 parks across Seattle on Green Seattle Day, and this year, the organization is hoping to do even more.
The Green Seattle Day planting party will kick off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Rainier Community Center (registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and snacks). After a brief welcome, buses will deliver volunteers to four restoration projects in Southeast Seattle – Genesee Park, Cheasty Greenspace and Seward Park. Volunteers can participate in educational and family-oriented activities throughout the day and are invited to return by bus to Rainier Community Center to enjoy a free lunch and hang out with fellow volunteers.
