Community input needed for High Point Community Center play area renovation project

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) invites the community to provide input on the High Point Community Center play area renovation project on Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the High Point Community Center, 6920 34th Ave. SW.  The landscape architect, project planner and project manager will provide information on the renovation project and gather community input on play features and amenities. The play area is south of the community center near the tennis courts. This is an all-ages event with light snacks and children’s activities. We encourage all to attend and participate by providing input on the best play area design option for the High Point neighborhood.

This project will replace the play equipment, provide access improvements, and improve safety and other features at the park. Please participate in a survey for the project.

Approved by Seattle voters in 2014, the Seattle Park District provides more than $47 million a year in long-term funding for Seattle Parks and Recreation including maintenance of parklands and facilities, operation of community centers and recreation programs, and development of new neighborhood parks on previously acquired sites.

Seattle Parks and Recreation invites community to review schematic design of Smith Cove Park

Seattle Parks and Recreation invites the community to participate in the Smith Cove Park project on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Magnolia Community Center, 2550 34th Ave. W. This meeting is an opportunity to learn about the project and provide input on the schematic design for Seattle’s new waterfront park. Smith Cove Park is located just west of Pier 91 at the foot of Magnolia Hill on Elliott Bay at 1451 23rd Ave.

 This project will develop the 4.9-acre easterly waterfront property (east of 23rd Ave. W) and make improvements to the westerly property which is the playfield at Smith Cove Park (west of 23rd Ave. W). The expanded park will provide opportunities for active and passive recreation for all ages and abilities, increase environmental sensitivity, and make the park inviting and usable for more people. Improvements to enhance the playability of the field used for youth sports will also be made to the existing playfield at Smith Cove Park. Thank you to everyone who participated in the first meeting. We encourage you to attend this meeting and see how your input has helped shape the design.

 In early 2016, Seattle Parks and Recreation hired GGN as the design consultant. GGN and Seattle Parks and Recreation will use the outreach and concept completed by the Friends of Smith Cove Park (FoSCP) in 2015 as the starting point for the design of the park.

Community encouraged to provide input on 2017 Development Plan, Gap Analysis and Long-term Acquisition Strategies and learn about upcoming improvements for Brighton Playfield

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) invites the community to provide input on SPR’s 2017 Development Plan, Gap Analysis and Long-term Acquisition strategies for open space on Saturday, Feb 4, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at The Royal Room (5000 Rainier Ave. S) during a Housing Affordability and Livability (HALA) Open House.

This open house is being held in conjunction with other City departments and provides an opportunity for the community to learn about SPR’s walkability mapping and to give input on priorities for long-term open space acquisition goals. SPR will also present the schematic design for the Brighton Playfield renovation project.

The 2017 Development Plan is a 6-year plan that documents and describes SPR facilities and lands, looks at Seattle’s changing demographics, and lays out a vision for the future. A goal in the Seattle 2035 Comprehensive Plan is to consider access to our parks by transit, bicycle, and on foot when acquiring, siting and designing new park facilities or improving existing ones. SPR manages approximately 11% of the City’s land area, and is proposing a new mapping approach based upon walkability to inform the City’s long-term acquisition strategies for future open space.

New Greenwood/Phinney park project update and community review

Seattle Parks and Recreation presents schematic design and acquires demolition permit

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) invites the community to review the design for the new Greenwood/Phinney park on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017 at the Greenwood Senior Center (525 N. 85th St.). Please join SPR’s staff and Cascade Design Collaborative designer team from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to learn about the project and provide feedback on the design.

The design elements include natural play elements, an open lawn, a gathering/ plaza space with seating, a loop path, and planted areas. The project also includes low-impact design strategies featuring amended soils, porous concrete, and increased infiltration created by the new open space. Street improvements as well as a raised crosswalk connecting the Greenwood branch library to the park are proposed and will provide better community connections. All of these elements were identified by the community during the design phase of this project. Families, neighbors, and the Phinney/Greenwood community are encouraged to attend this upcoming meeting.

SPR purchased two property sites between N 81st and N 82nd on the east side of Greenwood to develop a park (the mini-mart site purchased in Nov. 2012 and the pub property immediately north, which was purchased in July 2015). The two buildings will be demolished in mid to late March. SPR anticipates demolition to be complete by the end of May 2017.

The Seattle Park District funds the development of the south parcel to provide the Greenwood/Phinney urban area access to open space. Design and public input will be completed for both the north and south parcels to create a seamless design. Current budget estimates allow us to get the loop pathway and plantings into both parcels, however, not all features can be accommodated in this phase.

Seattle Park District funds the renovation of two Ballard park play areas

webster-8-003Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) renovated Gilman Playground (923 NW 54th St.) and Webster Park (3025 NW 68th St.) play areas, both of which opened in December 2016. The play area renovations replaced aging play equipment and improved park accessibility.

Gilman Park features a play structure with a 16-foot tall play tower, two new slides, and inclusive play elements designed for 5- to 12-year-old children. A structure with a slide and new swings was installed for 2- to 5-year-old children. The park also features an accessible ramp, providing access for all into the play area, as well as a new concrete seating plaza.

Webster Park includes a new play structure for 2- to 5-year-old children, complete with inclusive play elements and a rainbow slide similar in design to the old slide that was in the park. Play structures for 5- to 12-year-old children include rocks and rope elements that offer climbing and balance opportunities. SPR installed a new sand digging area and provided new basketball backboards, hoops, and nets. The entry at 68th St., along with a portion of the sidewalk, was improved to provide universal access into the play area.

Mayor to Award Seattle Park District Funds to Amy Yee Tennis Center and Kubota Garden

Join us Thursday, Dec. 15 at 2:00 p.m.

On Thursday, December 15, Mayor Murray will award major projects at the Amy Yee Tennis Center and Kubota Garden.  The funding is from the Seattle Park District’s Major Projects Challenge Fund, an initiative which leverages Park District funding with community-raised matching funds. The Fund awards are based on a recommendation from the Park District Oversight Committee and confirmed by Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) Superintendent Jesús Aguirre.

Amy Yee Tennis Center Check Award Ceremony: At 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15 the Mayor will present a check for $1,273,000 to the Amy Yee Tennis Center Advisory Council. The tennis center project will build an enclosure over the six existing outdoor courts that will be heated, lighted, secure, and programmable for tennis year-round. Currently these outdoor courts are only used during the summer months. The project will expand the capacity of the tennis center and enable it to offer more programs to more people. The tennis center is located at 2000 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.

Kubota Garden Check Award Ceremony: At 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 15, the Mayor will present a check for $925,000 to the Kubota Garden Foundation. There are two phases to the Kubota Garden project. The first phase is the construction of the wall to the north of the Entry Gate and the completion of an accessible path. The second phase is the wall on the south side of the current parking lot. The project includes a retaining wall to create additional parking. Kubota Garden is located at 9817 55th Ave. S.

Background on the Major Projects Challenge Fund: The six-year financial plan for the Seattle Park District includes the Major Projects Challenge Fund, which provides $1.6 million annually to finance the redevelopment of SPR facilities. The intent of the Fund is to leverage community-generated funding to supplement the Park District funds. To maximize the impact of the funding, SPR combined two-years of funding for the initial round of awards. Applications for the funding from community organizations were scored based on criteria developed in consultation with the Park District Oversight Committee. The Committee reviewed the applications and recommended a slate of awards. Two projects were considered “shovel ready”: Amy Yee Tennis Center and Kubota Garden. Many other projects received smaller amounts for planning, ranging from $30,000 to $93,000.

Additional Project Awards: In addition to the construction funds awarded to the Amy Yee Tennis Center and Kubota Garden, planning grants were awarded to the following organizations.

Work to repair the Burke-Gilman Trail and detour will be completed on Dec. 2, 2016

Repairs to four sections of the Burke-Gilman Trail that runs through the University District are complete and the final section will be completed on Fri. Dec 2, 2016. This final section detours cyclists off the trail near the University of Washington campus onto 25th Ave. NE. This detour is less than a half a mile and the best alternative route.

Cyclists and pedestrians are asked to use caution in this area. Please dismount and walk bikes when crossing at Pend Oreille Road NE and 25th NE. The contractor has flaggers on the trail during working hours; please follow the signs. Seattle Parks and Recreation regrets the inconvenience to trail users and appreciates their cooperation. Seattle Park District funds swimming beach piling replacement projects at Green Lake and Lake Washington

Seattle Parks and Recreation awarded Quigg Brothers, Inc. the construction contract to replace the pilings at seven swimming beaches along Lake Washington and two swimming beaches at Green Lake. The project will replace selected wood pilings used to secure swim area ropes and floats with steel helical pipe piles. The piling replacement will improve safety at these public beaches.

This project includes both the west and east swim beaches at Green Lake Park and the beaches along Lake Washington: Seward Park, Mount Baker Park, Madrona Park, Madison Park, Matthews Beach Park and Magnuson Park.

Seattle Parks and Recreation is working to minimize construction impacts and manage environmental impact issues. All Lake Washington swim beach work will be done from the water. The projects at Green Lake Park will require temporary closure of the trail near the Small Craft Center. On the morning of Tues. Nov. 22, there will be intermittent closure of the trail to launch the barge and crane. We anticipate closing the trail again on the morning of Tues. Dec 6 to remove the barge and crane.

Ethiopian dinner at Yesler Community Center

On Nov. 19, Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Lifelong Recreation unit and the program leaders of our East African Senior Meal Program, which is supported in part by the Seattle Park District, co-hosted a Fall Festival at Yesler Community Center. The event was open to the public and more than 80 people attended. Community members enjoyed activities like bingo, arts and crafts, Amharic music, a photo booth, a raffle, and a traditional Ethiopian dinner. Volunteers who support both the meal program and the work being done at Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands were recognized at the event and will receive a Denny Award for outstanding volunteer stewardship on December 6.

Night Maintenance Team makes South Park Community Center shine!

Thanks to the 2014 voter-approved Seattle Park District, we’ve added a Night Maintenance Team, which works on a variety of repairs, upgrades, and other preventive maintenance to better preserve our facilities. And because this team works at night, facilities such as our pools and community centers don’t have to be closed, and people can use them during the day!

Recently, the Night Maintenance Team finished a d three-week maintenance window at South Park Community Center. The painters prepped and painted the gymnasium, kitchen, hallway trim and offices, and did touch-up painting throughout the facility. The plumber replaced all the soft parts in the restroom fixtures, replaced the flush-o-meters and gaskets on the restroom toilets, and lowered and replaced the drinking fountain in the hallway. The carpenter installed new baseboards in the hallways and replaced the countertops in the restrooms. The electrician installed new emergency lighting and guards in the gymnasium and repaired wiring in the computer room.

The crew also did drain repair work at Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center; worked on the new broiler at Garfield Community Center; and cleaned clogged drains at Golden Gardens Bathhouse and Southwest Teen Life Center.
