Community invited to South Park Community Center to review sitewide plan and enjoy free movie night

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) invites the community to review the South Park Community Center Sitewide Plan and a screening of Disney’s Coco on Friday, March 9, 2018 from 7 to 10 p.m. The event will be held at South Park Community Center’s gym at 8319 8th Ave. S., 98108. The community is encouraged to attend.

The Seattle Park District Major Projects Challenge fund provided $50,000 for a South Park Community Center playfield and play area sitewide plan. SPR hired Broadview Planning in 2017 to lead the planning and design with an emphasis on providing strategies for mitigating negative health impacts resulting from the site’s proximity to a major transportation corridor, incorporating the principles of crime prevention through environmental design and approaching this project with cultural competency with a focus on engaging underrepresented communities.

The South Park Vision Plan provided a starting point for the design. Broadview planning incorporated feedback from the community and prepared the final concept design for the site that will be presented at this event. The design includes the renovation of the playfield, re-locating the play area with potential for a future spraypark, fitness zone and dog off-leash area.

This plan was developed with funding from the first round of the Major Projects Challenge Fund community-initiated projects, announced in December 2016, that provided small awards for feasibility and preliminary design work to help define the scope of potential future projects and awards to two construction projects. The MPCF awards were based on screening criteria that included an equitable prioritization scoring matrix, and came recommended by the Seattle Park District Oversight Committee and confirmed by Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Superintendent.
