206 Forward members visit the Tiny Home Community in Georgetown
206 Forward Youth Advocates of Seattle are currently building a Tiny Home to provide a safe living place for a community member in need. The group is partnering with the Low Income Housing Institute to place the home in a Tiny Home Community in Seattle. The Tiny Home is being constructed over the course of three build days on Feb. 24, March 3 and March 10.
206 Forward is a Seattle Parks and Recreation program made up of young leaders who advocate for policy and practices that promote equity, and who organize community actions and service projects with youth from all over Puget Sound. In addition to providing housing for someone to transition from living outside, 206 Forward participants aim to bring greater attention to the issue of homelessness and how young people are able to contribute to the solution.
Program participants meet every Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Rainier Beach Community Center to identify the root causes of key issues such as homelessness, racism in school discipline policy, police brutality, and the school-to-prison pipeline. The group discusses how these issues impact youth and work to come up with possible solutions and actions. In addition to dissecting important social issues facing young people, participants build their advocacy skills through public speaking and networking activities.
