Introduction:
The Carkeek Park Advisory Council (CPAC) and Seattle Parks and Recreation invite proposals for placement of up to five temporary outdoor artworks in Carkeek Park, an approximately 190-acre urban forest located in NW Seattle, from August 5, 2017 – October 15, 2017. The deadline for submissions is June 18, 2017; there is no fee to apply.
Artists and artist teams will be offered an honorarium of $1,000 ($500 upon successful installation of accepted projects, and another $500 upon successful de-installation of projects). For the ninth season of the ongoing series, the organizers have selected ArtSiteLtd, a professional sculpture installation team, as curator. The theme for the 2017 Heaven & Earth installation is cultivation:
Cultivate/d
When we cultivate, we invest our time, energy and resources into an existing environment or relationship (even with ourselves) to foster growth. This may mean working the earth or learning a new skill or reaching out to our neighbors to strengthen our communities. We invite artists to demonstrate what they hope for when they cultivate and/or what they realize as a result of cultivating.
There are five distinct sites at Carkeek Park selected for the Cultivate/d exhibition. Some are open field environments while others are discovered through woodsy paths and lend themselves to more intimate viewing. The park attracts diverse communities for family gatherings, educational opportunities, or social events and is set against a backdrop of the Puget Sound. We invite the artist to contemplate the concept of cultivation as it relates to nature, culture, or personal growth.
We encourage site specific work and will work with chosen artists to find a suitable site and/or you may make a case for a specific site and how it is suitable for your specific artwork.
Sites 7, 9, 11, 12, as well as areas along the Lower Meadow (near end of one-way loop road in field to the south) are available for the 2017 art placements. http://heavenandearth.carkeekpark.org/sites/
The Call is open to artists of all mediums, established or emerging. All work should have a minimal impact on the park and eventually leave “no trace” following removal. Up to five artists and/or artist teams will be selected from the pool of applicants and offered an honorarium of $1000 ($500 upon install, $500 upon de-install by the selected deadline). The submissions will be juried by a committee working closely with Seattle Parks and Recreation, CPAC, and the curator. The Heaven and Earth archive and website, featuring artist statements, biographies, and images will be updated for the project by CPAC. Artists may also be eligible for a Seattle Arts & Culture smART ventures grant (no deadline; ongoing).
An estimated 50,000 people will visit Carkeek Park during the display period. The exhibition is made possible by the Carkeek Park Advisory Council, Seattle Parks and Recreation, and the Associated Recreation Council.
Sequence of events and deadlines:

The week of June 19: Jurying
June 25: Artists contacted and contract agreement sent
June 30: Signed agreements and W9’s and COI’s returned
July 22-July 29: Installation period. Special arrangements on a case by case basis may be made for an extension or early start.
July 30: Curatorial tour
August 5: Opening ceremony
De-installation period: October 16-November 1, 2017
Participating artists will need to sign a W-9 to process payment, as well as sign a liability waiver recognizing the inherent risk of exhibiting unsecured art in a public setting and seeking permission to use any images for promotional purposes.
