Walk with Sound Steps program at Green Lake

Seattle Parks and Recreation’s “Sound Steps” program is sponsoring a walk around Green Lake on Saturday April 21, 2012 starting at 9 a.m. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. at the Green Lake Community Center, 7201 E. Green Lake Dr. N. The registration fee is a $15 suggested donation or $5 if you are wearing a Sound Steps T-shirt.

This family friendly, untimed event features live music, light refreshments and raffle prizes. The sponsor, Super Jock ‘n Jill, an athletic apparel and shoe store, is providing 15% off coupons to the first 25 finishers of the 5K and 10K walks.

Sound Steps is a volunteer supported walking program with Seattle Parks and Recreation, Lifelong Recreation. This program is designed to help provide the health benefits of regular exercise for people 50 and older. Sound Steps helps people increase their physical activity and social connections in this walking program that is accessible and welcoming to all.

Sound Steps offers weekly walking groups from a variety of locations, monthly hikes, and a training program (from February through June) to participate in a 5K, 10K and Half Marathon walk event.

The Seattle Human Services Department’s Aging & Disability Services (ADS) division is a partner with Seattle Parks and Recreation in activities and programs that promote healthy aging among older adults. Some Seattle-area Senior Centers funded by the City include Sound Steps programs. ADS also recently launched a web site that encourages walking as a healthy activity. See www.seattle.gov/walking.

For more information, please call Mari Becker, the Sound Steps Coordinator, at 206-684-4664 or visit http://www.seattle.gov/parks/seniors/soundsteps.htm.
