Meeting set for Lawton Park Play Area Renovation
Seattle Parks and Recreation will host design meetings for Lawton Play Area Renovation on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 and on Wednesday, January 21, 2010. Both meetings are being held at Lawton Elementary, 4000 27th Ave W. The public is encouraged to attend and provide input on the changes that will be coming to the play area.
The renovation project, identified in the Parks and Green Spaces Levy, will provide new play equipment for children ages 2 -12, site improvements to enhance safety and access improvements to facilitate use.
Parks will present initial concepts for the community to evaluate at the first meeting. This will be the community’s opportunity to provide valuable input on design options and amenities. Information collected from the first meeting will be incorporated into a preferred design. This preferred design will be presented at the January 21 meeting, and refined with community input.
Seattle voters passed the Parks and Green Spaces Levy by a 59% vote in November 2008. The new $146 million Levy provides acquisition funding for new neighborhood parks and green spaces and development funding for projects such as improved playfields, reservoir lid parks, renovated playgrounds, community gardens, and safety upgrades at city owned cultural facilities. Recognizing the importance of creating vibrant and engaging green spaces for Seattle as it grows, Seattle Parks and Recreation moved quickly into action, and by November 2009 — just one year after the passage of the Levy — will have added 2.53 acres to the park system and completed eight new development projects, will have four projects in construction, and another 21 projects in the planning and design phase.
